Boracay's Road to Ruin

Overdevelopment and poor governance are at the root of Boracay's woes. Unless something is done, this world-renowned tourist destination will become a wasteland.

In 1997, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources issued a report that revealed the high levels of coliform in the waters off Boracay. That report was widely reported in the newspapers and prompted a flurry of tourist cancellations. This forced then President Ramos to create a multi-agency task force to look into the problem and offer solutions. Nearly six years later, the problem remains.
